Blog: I don't understand how blogs work for promoting a company.?

I see adds wanting blog writers to write blogs for companies. I hear marketing strategies using blogs, but I don't get the concept. I see how one can write a blog somewhere, but how does that get to the people who buy the product? Ads and banners are placed on busy pages where millions of people will see it, but a blog is just a post, like a journal, hidden away on some web page. How does that help promote a business?Please help if you can.

A blog is more of a relationship building technique. It builds trust with your prospects to turn them into customers. However, you can still use the blog to bring more traffic into your website with other techniques as well.In today's consumer world, the consumer first does research before buying, and they buy from who they like. Your blog helps the prospect learn the information they need to make an intelligent buying decision, and by giving them that information it makes you a trusted expert creating a relationship with them.To use the blog to bring more traffic to your website, in each blog entry a link should be added to link back to your website. Overtime if done properly your website will grow a large number of incoming links from your blog putting your website higher in the search engines.
