What is MySQL? Do I need it for Fan Update?

I've had several personal/blog sites before, and I recently applied for hosting for a new subdomain. An option on the site was to have Fan Update downloaded for me, and I said that I would like it because I didn't want to use Cutenews. I've tried Fan Update before, but I think I need MySQL and I really don't know what that is/what it does. :/ If you could, please explain MySQL and/or Fan Update to me. MySQL is a Free alternative to MSSQL or Oracle.
