is there a dedicated power socket for mid level graphics card? or it get its power straight from the motherboard? i saw some pictures of hi end ge-force (9600) with six pin power supply..and when i look my pc's power box it doesn't have one for pci-e card..i'm plannig to buy 8500gt..i'm not sure if it has a separate power supply socket? but i'm willing to buy another power box so i can use my mid level card..

The 8500gt requires a 300 watt power supply so as long as you have 300 watt or greater power supply you should be all set. 8500gt does not require a 6 pin dedicated power cable. It is able to obtain all its power from the PCI-E slot.

Yes, it will work. The 8600GT and below draw it off the PCI-E bus; no need for a 6-pin cable. They should work on 300 watt supplies; even a 250 watt system that draws little power will be able to handle them at peak draw.If you're expecting much, though, you'll be dissapointed. I bought a factory overclock 8600GT and it couldn't play Second Life faster than 20FPS at 1280x1024, even with the very latest video drivers. Admittedly, that's with the less optimized Linux drivers, but supposedly the Linux SL client is faster than the Windows one. It lags in other non-MMORPG games, too, though- even Doom III. As a point of reference, my card's about 120% faster than an 8500GT! Gamers look down on the lower rungs of the 8800-series with reason; they're inadequate for many tasks at this point. For 60$, Newegg has an AMD HD3850. Couple that with a 30$ Antec EA430 power supply, and for a ninety dollar ultimate investment (140 initial,) you'll have some serious gaming prowess as well as clean and stable Seasonic-OEMed power. If you must get the 8500GT for money reasons, don't pay more than forty after MIR, and know that a much faster 8600GT often costs as little as fifty, and has for months,HD3850:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...6&Tpk=ea%2b430
