can i use the alt attributes at HTML code to preview an image??

i want to create a website.. and when my cursor point to the picture a larger picture will popup. its like the alt attributes but usually its will preview in text format, but i want it in picture.. is it possible to use the alt attributes?? please help me with this.. thanks
