It won't heart anything at all apart from not being able to open 'word' files, or creating them.

If you decide to reinstall word all original files in word format will be readable

just so you know, there is openOffice.org who also allows word docs to be opened, but this will slightly defeat the object as you will need to install another application which will use more resource (space)

It wouldn't hurt, but don't you have something else to uninstall? A lot of downloadable files online are in microsoft office format, you will not be able to view them as well.

It won't hurt anything, and you can get free viewer programs to read (not write) files that use Office extensions.
