Microsoft will not abandon Vista, they've made far too much money already. However they are also continuing development for XP with SP3 in the midst

No. Gates is a hardware junkie who believes that everybody should have the latest and greatest hardware -- or they shouldn't be computing. The power of algorithms is not something which appeals for him, and the trouble of upgrading XP to demand Vista-like hardware is really too much to be worth M$'s while. After all, they got the OLPC project to upgrade their hardware so they could put a version of Windows on it -- and they still haven't finished their port of Windows.

Don't think so...Vista is a major release for Microsoft, and when they can live with a lousy release like ME, Vista is far better then that. They have invested hundreds of millions (if not billions) of dollars worth of efforts into it and no sane businessman would simply revoke such investment. And by the way they are earning good money out of it too..As far as XP they are still into it so no point of 'returning' to it.I agree that if you have a system specifically built around VISTA, you can enjoy the (so called) beautiful graphics and it is more secure then XP. However, the cost of the beautiful screen is a lot of applications not working on it... so the choice is ultimately that of the user.
