You will get more information by looking it up on the internet or speaking to someone at the clinic where she is getting this done. They shouldve explained it all to you.

I just had a D & C done.I am in Australia and was put to sleep - the whole procedure took around 10 minutes (mine was to remove a miscarried pregnancy) and afterwards I had no pain but had bleeding for a few days.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. I know what it's like. She will probably be given a sedative that will pretty much knock her out entirely (she won't be conscious), but it's not the same thing as really being "put under."There is some pain and cramping afterwards (but not too terrible), and a fair amount of bleeding. Just make sure she takes it easy for a few days.

I've never heard of a D&C for irregular cycles, but I'm no doctor (I am a nursing student though.) Yes, D&C's involve anesthesia, but it's not for long and she shouldn't be in any major pain afterward. Usually this procedure is done in an ambulatory setting (meaning no hospital stay is required--basically an in-an-out procedure.)

Most of the time doctors use "twilight sedation" which is not as strong as what you get for surgeries like :wisdom teeth removal, or tonsilectomy: Some women fall asleep and some women remain awake but have no pain and a scattered memory of the procedure. I just say make sure she takes the pain meds they give her after and make sure she takes it easy for a couple of days. Also to help cope with any issues of sadness have your wife write a letter to the baby that is lost and also to herself giving her guidance and strenght and remember to pray for things to go better.
