Strictly speaking, history implies written records - before writing evolved is pre-history.This is over-simplifying the case, however, since cave paintings dating well before the period you mention appear to include symbols and pictures which may or may not be thought of as writing. The meaning is obviously lost, but we should be willing to accept that our distant ancestors were just as intelligent as we are today, but without the modern technology.
