SEO question re alt image tags and spacer.gif files?

I have thousands of spacer.gif files on my website. If I put one description in the alt tags for all files won't that be a bit spammy ?But If I give them different names in different places that's not good, and neither is no alt tag at all What to do ?

You should use alt tags to give a description to pictutes, not to spacers. Using an alt for thousand of spacers will definetly hurt your SEO. No search engine likes spamming.
