I would suggest that at present, those engaged in SEO have a very bright future. Remember, search engines are arguably gatekeepers to a significant proportion of the information on the web; the higher up in their rankings your organisation, the higher your visibility. By optimising your website for a particular search engine, you have the potential to enhance your website's visibility significantly. I dont think that this will change any time soon.I think that the field will evolve substantially over the next few years. We are already seeing the rise of video content on such websites as Youtube, and audio content in the form of Podcasts. Search engines are capable of picking up this media. Those within the field of SEO now need to establish ways of ensuring that their websites are able to exploit the emerging content to ensure continued visibility. This is discussed in a very interesting book called 'Marketing to the Social Web'.
