what is the average hourly rate ?

I be looking to develope a portal site on a later date, have done some research on a number of modules that i can install using PHP & MySQL, but will need some serious modifications, can anyone please tell me how much i should be paying for hourly if i was to get a decent developer/coder.

I think you would be better off agreeing a contract to have X, Y and Z done as opposed to how long it takes them in hours. But thats just my 2p
